I live with my wife (Vietnamese national) abroad in Singapore. We sent our PR package in March and have received SA, AOR2, and it's "In Process" for both of us in ECAS.

The issue is I really want to visit my family for Christmas with my wife. We had hoped the PR application would be approved before then, but I'm not holding my breath.

So with the PR application in process, can we still apply for a visitor visa for her so we can visit my family over Christmas, then come back to Singapore and "wait out" the PR application process? If so...

- How long does the visitor visa application take?
- What if her PR was approved after a visitor visa was granted? Would she need a new visa? What if it was approved while we were on holiday in Canada?

As flights to Canada are not cheap, we'd rather plan the trip sooner than later...

Maybe I'm overthinking all this. Appreciate any thoughts.

I applied for a TRV for my Thai wife while her PR application was under process. The TRV was rejected on the following basis (as per the ATIP notes)

(Applicant) to accompany Cdn husband for a family visit. Has an FCI application for which ELIG is pending an interview. Unclear at this point whether FCI will be successful. PA is a housewife with no personal funds and very limited travel. Not satisfied sufficient ties demonstrated that would compel PA to depart Canada within the period authorized.

So as long as you're not in the same boat as we were, it might be worth applying for a TRV.

I also applied for TRV for my Vietnamese wife while her PR application was under process. We were also rejected.

The process took about 2-3 weeks. Pretty straightforward online application. Need to document thins like:
- what you will be doing and plans in Canada
- financial support
- wife's ties to Vietnam

For more, see http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/tools/temp/visa/processing/admissibility.asp?lang=en

Personally, I think it is not easy to get TVR but there are success stories. For the cost, worth trying I guess.

I am a Chinese Canadian citizen sponsoring my Tunisian wife, pending PR in Paris, we applied TRV for her back in May. I invited her to attend my wedding here in B.C. as my parents were elderly; didnot travel to my first wedding in Tunisia.

even though she had been traveled to Japan, China, Hong Kong, Australia , although 2 US F1 rejections before.

she got rejected of TRV.. reason? "family tie in Canada". I was so angry and brought this letter directly to my MP office. Her assistance told me the law is law; nothing they can do.. they were tons of applicants in my stage. some were asked to be waited for 2 years.. say in South Asia. many kids growing up not be able to see her mom or dad.. as CIC refuses to let their kids meet their parents due to worry about over staying.

i told my MP, please tell the Minister, what's the difference of your "stupid policy/approach" like this different from Donlad Trump.. "Build that wall!" yes. i did use the word "stupid". sorry, i am a redneck Chink; would not care what they think.

CIC's policy is highly discriminated against none western nationals . of course any those TRV nationals want to meet up their family. but you wanna someone prove 100% they have no intention of reunite or settle in Canada .. that's nutbars. well, none visa countries like UK, US, Australia often turned out to have the highest illegal/undocumented workforce in Canada. whats up with that?

My wife's Vietnamese, she got a multiple entry TRV for life of passport, and she applied after sending in the PR application. TRV app will take about 2-4 weeks to process, and if her PR was approved after TRV visa is granted, she will have to return the passport to Singapore VO to get a new immigrant visa.

It is somewhat difficult to get approved in your situation, but the best you can do is send in as much supporting documents as you can to prove your wife will not overstay and will return to Vietnam before visa expires.

Thanks for the replies all. I think we want to give it a shot.

For those that applied, a question about medical: do we need to do another medical to apply for TRV or can we just mention the medical that was sent with the PR application (which GCMS notes say was passed)?

I ask because we sent the documentation with the original application for the medical and don't have copies (and even if we did, the medical centre forwarded the results to CIC directly anyway). If we do another medical, and then for the PR app get asked to do re-medical (because it's expiring in November).... this just sounds confusing :-X

Just an update here: last night we received instructions to mail in my wife's passport to SVO for the TRV, so I'm guessing it's approved? If so WOW it only took just over 2 weeks. If only the PR application were this quick ;D

Ours took about 2 weeks as well. Her visa is likely approved, but it's not always a guarantee. There have been people who are instructed to send passport, only to get a refusal letter. The only way to know 100% is if you check online to see if it says "This application has been approved".
