PR application and asylum in US

Dear All,

Is there any problem or risk to seek asylum in US when the PR process for immigration to Canada has reached the stage of "Background check"?

No but if you qualify for PR it would be a much better option. No guarantees when it comes to asylum and it will be a lengthy process.

Do you have your passport in hand and is it valid? One of the requirements of the PR process is that you have a valid passport and be able to submit it to IRCC when the time comes. If authorities are holding your passport - that could be a problem.

Also note that if you are successful in getting Canadian PR and end up leaving the US, you should expect you'll have challenges returning in the future due to the abandoned refugee claim. This obviously isn't a problem if you have no plans to return to the US in the future.
