Dear Advisors,

I understand If a student who completes 2-3 years education from Canadian university or college, s/he will be eligible to apply for work permit for the length of studies. My questions are:

1. I am not sure student will be given this work visa on an employer basis or
2. Is it totally open (we called work visa in UK, which they get after postgraduate study) meaning no employer required?
3. As quite a few international students who would like to attain Masters degree from UK (as it is one year), is it possible for them to
get say 2 years work permit after their 2-3 year studies in Canada and move to UK for one year Master and return to Canada?
Would their remaining time on work permit (1-2 years) still be valid?

Regards

If you complete 2 or more years and graduate you will be eligible for a 3-year PGWP. It is an open work permit.

3. As quite a few international students who would like to attain Masters degree from UK (as it is one year), is it possible for them to

Don't know.

Thanks Jes. Surely the second part, I believe, has grey area. I have not seen any thing on it. In UK, as per my 10 years experience, you can stay out of UK after you have a work visa ("postgraduate visa"). I am observing Canadian Education is following the same steps, which UK Education (universities/colleges) did 5-6 years before.

I do not see having any problem in having postgraduate work permit and going abroad for studies to attain a masters degree, but just want to make sure.

I will wait for another champs to reply as well and see what they say.

Thanks again Jes.

1. It's totally open. You do not need an employer as far as you are a graduate.
2. See 1.
3. Nope, it would not be valid.

Yes, the remaining time would still be valid on your PGWP. Of course you know you have a visa to be able to re-enter Canada or are from a visa exempt country.

Hi,
Even I had few queries, hope you guys can clarify them:

- Is the three year work permit through PGWP valid only for masters and post graduate diploma courses?

- If I finish a 2 year Diploma course will I be eligible for 3 years work permit through PGWP?

- For eg. If I apply for a 1 yr PG course in Humber and then after completion of my course I apply for another 1 year PG course in Seneca within 2-3 months, would that be counted as 2 year full time studies and will I be eligible for 3 years work permit through PGWP?

Thanks,
Merwyn

@ Merwyn,

As far our understanding is concerned from CIC website is:

1. You study one year, you get 8 months PSWP. For 2 years, you get 16 months. It is not one or two years, it is 8 months (after completion of studies).

* Remember one thing, once you get PSW for say 8 or 16 months, it does not land you a job, it permits to find a job on a full time basis. This also does not make employers to hire you, after PSW period is over.

You've got it backward. If you study 8 months you get a 1 year PGWP, etc.

Why not? If the PGWP is still valid then you can still work in Canada until it runs out. You can do whatever you want wherever as long as you enter Canada on a valid permit and/or valid VISA you're OK
