Hello,

What defines a place of residence vs. a travel stay? Is it 180 days? (Is there a free web resource that defines this stuff clearly?)

My partner and I traveled to New Zealand in 2013 on a working holiday visa. We stayed there 8 months, but the first three months we literally lived in our van. For the last 5 months we had a physical address, so I will write this in our address history. But during that first three months I am not sure what to write. We had be in the US and forwarded our mail to my mothers house. Do I write her address as my residence at that time? My partner's US visa expired when he left his job at that time, so he legally could not have been 'living' in the US then. Should he put his father's home in France, a place that we eventually returned to and lived for a few months during a job hunt?

When we left NZ we country hopped for another several months before coming back to France and staying put for a while. Again, should we use our parents homes as permanent addresses for that period? I am cursing our vagabond ways a bit right now. Exact dates and addresses are so tedious and confusing!

Forgive me if this question is redundant. I will keep digging in the archives for more clues but if someone can help define travel vs. address history, I'll be very grateful.

Write your mother's address until you had a residence in New Zealand. I travelled in the US for 6 months and was on the road the whole time but for legal purposes my registered address was with my parents in Australia. In your personal history you can write this as travel time, and attach a LoE to explain the fact that you didn't have addresses but you were travelling. I also cursed my vagabond ways but the most important thing is that you're honest about it all and try to make it as clear as you can. You might want to attach a supplementary document outlining where you lived, travelled, stayed etc for all of the required periods of time.

Hi, Can you please explain what you did with regards to address history? I backpacked Europe and South East Asia for 1 year, while having my base in India. I am not sure what to enter as my address for that time period? In Iceland, I stayed in Van for 15 days and didn't have any address. While in Vietnam, I spent 1 month there, but stayed in 3 different places for that time. Please help.
