When you receive your VISA and you do soft landing, can you return to your home country?

How long should you stay in Canada before you can do that? How long you can stay outside of Canada after your first landing and returning?

Thanks.

Depends... if you got someone that can mail you your PR card to your home country... you can leave the next day if you want. If you dont have anyone you should wait for your PR card(6-8 weeks) before you leave Canada.

You need to be 3 out of 5 years within landing anyway you want

You can leave same day as your landing if you wanted to, the most important thing is to have a Canadian address for your PR card to be sent to , if not you will need to apply for a PRTD when back in your home country to be able to fly back.

If you have time also advisable on a short landing to attend Service Canada to get a SIN.

When you become a PR you commit to residing in Canada for 2 years out of every 5 years. So in the 5 years from initial landing you must accumulate a minimum 730 days. In theory this means following a short landing you could stay away for near 3 years but if you did that then must stay for 2 years without leaving at all.

After the initial 5 years the residency obligation is assessed on each new entry to the country, so 730 days in the 5 years preceding each entry. Failing to meet the 2 out of 5 years residency obligation can lead to PR status being revoked if discovered with any interaction with immigration for example such as entering the country, applying to renew a PR card or applying for a PRTD.

The previous poster referring to 3 out of 5 applies for citizenship applications where you would need to be physically resident in Canada for 3 years in the 5 years preceding a citizenship application.

Thanks for the response.

I'm not planning to stay away for a long time. My estimation says that I will be PR by end of this year, but I need to be around my family in home country until June 2019. I was thinking to do soft landing and return, then go back to Canada Q3 or Q4 2019. I also have friends and family that can mail me the PR cards.

So I can actually land in Canada, return after a week or two, have my friends mail me the PR and go back to reside in Canada mid 2019? That will work?

How long attend Service Canada to get a SIN will take? anything else I should consider?

Yes, your plan will work. Depending on the date and time when you land you can go to the Service Canada booth at the airport once you've completed the landing formalities it shouldn't take more than 10 min to get your SIN.

Otherwise you can go to a Service Canada branch, it took me about 30 min to get my SIN there (Toronto, St Clair office).

Yes, or you can flagpole. If you were anyway intending to go home for a visit, that works too.

For flag pole I dont have US Visa and not having Canadian temporary Visa...will that create issue..

My second question is silly but I am confused.. since I dont have tempory Visa can I leave Canada.. if I leave will that single entry Visa cancelled?? Or the single entry Visa valid till I come to Canada with in the time limit

You don't need a US visa to flagpole. Read up on the process.

Yes, you can leave Canada without a visa.. no one stops you leaving, even if you are out of status.

Your IM-1 immigrant visa will not be cancelled - it will be cancelled when you come back to Canada and complete your landing (whether by flagpoling or by flying in).
