Hi Everyone,

I have been thinking of applying for express entry for a while and have started the process of getting my ECA and IELTS completed.

My query is regarding the Malaysia police certificate since I completed my undergraduate education there. Malaysia guidelines say that only people who’ve stayed in Malaysia for more than 12 months consecutively can apply for and get the police clearance certificate. When I was a student there I used to stay a maximum of 8 months there from September to May and spent the 4 months of summer back home. So I can’t get the Clearance certificate from there.

So what should I do now? How do I circumvent this problem?

Quoted from Canada.ca:

If you have not lived in Malaysia for one year or more
, you are not required to provide a Malaysian police certificate. If you are asked for a police certificate from Malaysia, write: “I cannot provide a police certificate for the time I spent in Malaysia because certificates are only available to people who have lived in Malaysia for one year or more.”

You should make a PDF document stating this, and upload it in the part of your application where you would be expected to upload a Police Certificate

Okay Great. Thank you. I was only confused about that because the statement above does not say 12 consecutive months and only mentions one year. And because I studied There for three years; Sep 2012-May 2013, Sep 2013-May 2014, Sep 2014-May 2015 I thought they may count that as staying in Malaysia for more than one year.

I would make sure to mention “I cannot provide a police certificate for the time I spent in Malaysia because certificates are only available to people who have lived in Malaysia for 12 consecutive months or more. As I stayed in Malaysia for only 8 months on three separate occasions, I therefore am unable to request a Malaysian police certificate” , or something along those lines.

The VO reviewing your application probably isn't aware of the judicial system in Malaysia, so it would be a flag to him if you claim to have spent more than 2 years there without showing any Police Certificate.

Perfect. Thank you for the guidance.
