does anyone know how long an australian police check is valid for?

It can't be older than 3 months when submitted.

An australian police check is valid for 12 months and I was going to do it in australia before I came to canada which meant when I sent off my sponsorship papers my police check would have been 4 months old, so does that mean its no good and I would need to get a new one done?

They may or may not request that you get another done. If so you will get a letter asking you to do another and resubmit it.
