Hi everyone,

would someone be able to help me out with obtaining a police certificate from Turkey? I'm currently in Canada, and do not speak Turkish even nearly well enough to attempt to navigate their websites. I lived in Turkey for just over 6 months after I turned 18, then moved to Canada for my studies (and have been here ever since).
I was required to provide the government with a police certificate prior to obtaining a study permit, so theoretically they should already 'know' that I have been cleared and maybe even have that certificate on file (do they keep all the files??). I assume it will not be good enough to explain to them that I have provided a certificate once before..?
In any case, I'd love if someone could run me through the process of obtaining a police certificate from Turkey just in case!

Thanks,

Rebecca

Hey Rebecca,

here is the procedure from CIC website http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/security/police-cert/europe/turkey.asp

Police certificate needs to be sent to CIC together with your application within 3 months of issuing the certificate, so the previous one is definitely not valid.

If I were in your shoes, I would start the process right away, as it might take time. so if CIC asks for a certificate, then you are ahead of them, and hopefully your file won't be delayed too much.

A friend of mine had to do it from outside of turkey and it took him a good 3 to 4 months, so the earlier you start, the better it is in my opinion!
Good luck,
Sweden

It seems that instructions on CIC Web site are not up to date. I strongly suggest that you follow the (English!) instructions provided by the government of Turkey: www.adlisicil.adalet.gov.tr/yurtdisi.html

Police certificates can be obtained in 5 minutes, for 5 TL, when requested in person in Turkey, so I guess it will take less than 3-4 months for you to get yours through a consulate and that it will not be too expensive.

The document you need is "Adlî sicil ve arşiv kaydı".

The best is to send it together with your application because if you wait, it might delay your file. However, if everthing else is ready, then I can understand tht you want to send it right away, because otherwise your medicals or other certificates might expire.. ( note that there are quite a few documents that have expiring dates, so it needs a bit of planning).

If the rest of your application is ready, then you could send it, BUT include a letter to say that you are aware that you need to provide a Police Check from Turkey, but because of the delay you would like for your application to be considered already and you will send the Police Cehck as soon as you get it etc etc - something like this.

Include proofs that you actually HAVE requested the police check from Turkey - so do the procedure as suggested by Güzelyol (thanks for the update, very useful!), include a copy of that and the post registration that you have sent the letter (if it can not be done at the nearest turkish embassy) - and hope that they will understand... you need to show that you are trying to get the certificate - but if you can get it right away, then of course do it and send it together with your application!)

By the time you get the certificate back, you probably will have a file number and a sponsorship approval, and your file should be in the VO. Then send it to the VO with a letter explaining what the document is - it should avoid too much delay.... I did that for one Police Check that took me a long time to get, and it worked, so I hope it will be the same for you.

Good luck,
Sweden

thanks for the updated info. I've gotten in touch with the embassy in toronto, hopefully they will be able to help me out :)

Sweden: I've got everything else together, so I just want to send it off before things start expiring ;) I guess I will have to make a note and send the police certificate whenever it comes in.

thanks for your help!
