Police Certificate U.S.A.

Hello, everyone.

I am a Canadian, my wife is American. We are getting our stuff together to apply for my wife' Canadian PR and hopefully come to Canada. First step: Police certificate from the FBI.

Got my wife's prints done at the local police station. We are filling out the rest of the FD-258 fingerprint card and two boxes have a stumped. One is the "ORI number," which apparently the FBI says is a must. The other is the "Employer and address." My wife is not applying for any employment, obviously, so we have no idea what this box means either. Seems like we've hit a brick wall before getting out of the gate on this thing! Any help would be appreciated.

Again, questions are: On the FBI fingerprint card, which is used to get a police certificate to apply for Canadian PR, what is the "ORI number"? Is it really necessary? What is "Employer and address," and is it necessary?

Many thanks again!

I have personally been having trouble getting my fingerprints done where I live (in NY), and most of the trouble stems from lacking that pesky ORI number. The number identifies the organization asking for the prints and the purpose of having them done. Since I don't have one, the police station and local fingerprinting services have been less than cooperative about giving me what I need.

So I called the FBI and explained my situation. The woman I spoke to told me that to request a Criminal Background Check, there is no ORI number, since you are requesting it from them and not the other way around. She helpfully mailed out two fingerprint cards to me with an FBI stamp in the ORI box. Perhaps you could give them a call and request the same?

yeah, me neither. Who is saying the FBI says "it's a must"? i did put my current employer info in the employer box. i don't think the information is collected or used for any reason. if the police department is that adament about that number, ask them what it refers to.

another option is to check out your local board of education and see how they have teachers/substitues get fingerprinted. where i live, the city has a technician come in weekly to fingerprint people. a fee is paid directly to the technician, and he didn't care that i needed the card for immigration reasons. There are also security companies that offer fingerprint services. Though I'm sure the fee is higher than the police office.
