Police certificate QUESTION

I am a little bit confused.

On the CIC website, it says that I need to submit these...

• the English or French translation; and
• an affidavit from the person who completed the translation (if they’re not a certified translator); and
• a certified copy of the original document.

So if I have a Russian Police Certificate, can I NOTARIZE it in Canada itself? And then ask the certified translator to translate it? Will this be enough?

It doesn't work that way. The translator needs to be a 'Certified Translator' (i.e. a member of an agency such as say, Continental Translation Agencies Certification Bureau in Canada) and is not an option.

The usual steps taken are:

1. A Certified translator translates the documents and stamps them with his professional stamp and/or an embossed stamp.

2. He then provides an Affidavit stating the title of the document translated, the day the translation was conducted, from language, to language and swears that the translation is accurate and true. This Affidavit is signed by the Commissioner of Oaths and a sticker foil stamp is affixed to the affidavit.

3. The Translator then sends you:
a. The Affidavit
b. The Translated documents (stamped/ certified)
c. Photocopies of the original document (stamped/ certified)

The applicant is then required to submit all three (a,b and c) with his application.
The good news is a large number of agencies do this online and mail you the hard copies, so you can get it done no matter where you are in the world.
