Police Certificate/Clearances and Medical Examination

Hello. I just signed up on this forum and had a couple questions. I'm going to marry my girlfriend who lives in China this September and right now I'm looking at completing as much of the forms as I can, so when I'm back in Canada I can send away the application.

When you send the application to Ontario, do you need to send in the Police Certificate/Clearances and Medical Examination of your spouse? It is on the checklist so I'm just asking if my girlfriend needs to get that done now. Also when submitting the application if we are not common law do I need to fill out and submit that form? Same with the Use of Representative form, if I'm not using a Representative I shouldn't need to fill it out and submit it right?

Thank you for any help!

You can wait until the Police Clearance and Medicals are requested. I would suggest not doing that though. I waited until the Medicals were requested by CIC and I am convinced that it has caused a delay. If I could go back, I'd have sent them up front. I know it's pricey (Our medical was 390$) But like I said, I'm pretty sure it's causing a delay.

If you're not using a representative, you don't need to submit it. My Husband and I didn't.

I've heard of some cases where people sent a note to CIC saying the criminal checks are coming, and they were successful, but I wouldn't risk the chance of having your application returned. Just wait until you get those checks before you submit your application.

When it comes to the criminal records, those are the most time sensitive, as most of them are only valid if less than 3 or 6 months old. Check as to how old the Chinese criminal checks have to be. Medicals are valid for a year, but you should do them about a month or two before you submit the application so that you minimize the chance that you have to do a re-medical. I recommend you start applying for the criminal records about 2 months before you plan on submitting the application to account for the processing time to get the PCC, check to see how long it takes to get a criminal check from China.

Also I wouldn't recommend filling up the forms so early as they constantly get updated. Just focus on compiling relationship evidence as you get closer to the wedding date.

In Thailand, most times, a police clearance is done after marriage. They won't complete this without the proper instructions or accompanied by Canadian Husband (with marriage certificate).

You might want to check China's procedure first as I am not sure all countries are the same.

In some cases, it can be advantageous for the sponsor to complete the "appointment of representative" form.

It would have saved a month's delay in my wife getting her PRV. The letter from CIC to my wife's address in Ukraine arrived 6 months after is was sent. This was the letter telling her to bring her passport to the embassy to have her visa put in.

In short, if you have concerns about the postal system where the applicant resides, consider appointing a representative.

for the most part, requests from visa offices are received by the applicant through email. if no email is provided, then they will send notification through regular mail. the visa and copr gets sent through regular mail to the applicant.

the use of represntative form is useful if the sponsor wants to call about the applicant's application. CIC will not give out information to the sponsor unless it is regarding their own application or they are appointed as a representative by the applicant.

Sounds like my story is out of date! The experience with lost mail I refered to was about 6 years ago.
