Dear All

i want to Apply for MASC (Research based Programme) in University of Alberta but have no idea how to Conveince the Supervisor as university Administration told me that before Applying for Admission yopu should have to Conveince one of the Professor.

i was interested in M.Eng but unfortunately i have to Apply for Research Programme as University of Alberta is Not Accepting Application for M.Eng in Winter Intake and i have no other University option....

so please help me regarding this issue

1. Determine your field of interest.
2. Find the potential supervisors.
3. Send them short and precise emails on why you want to work under his/her supervision and what makes you stand out (make it as short as possible). Attach your CV and transcript with the email.
4. Send as many mails to as many supervisors as you can since out of 10 emails, you probably will get 2 or 3 replies since professors tends to be very busy people and don't reply to emails.
5. Personal suggestion: don't go for professor emeritus and professors with very high experience (they never pick students from email!). Always go for Associate professors since they tend to look for more research students.
6. If you have previous research experience and publications, that's gonna help you.
7. Don't bug too much. If they don't reply in like a week or too, try your luck for a second time. If it fails, let the supervisor go and aim for new ones.

I have also applied and got admitted in University of Alberta. My program is Master of Science in Mathematics (Research Based). I didn't send any emails to any prospective supervisor. If you go into detailed review of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research website, u will find that u have to choose your supervisor after the first term or a maximum after 1 year of completion of your program. With the application (online) you need to mail your documents (You should have 3.3 GPA or above), and with those you should send your statement of purpose outlining your field of interest and the prospective research you would be conducting in the university. If there is any faculty available and they agree (which they usually agree if your background academic performance is excellent) they will surely admit u and fund you for your entire program of studies.

There are some universities which want applicants to discuss with their supervisors about availability of research facilities prior to applying, but this is not the case at U of A.

There are two ways of doing it, and I know that both of them work:
1. Contact the professors
2. Simply fill out the application without contacting any professor

For the first, you have to first find your potential supervisors, then you should gather some information regarding their current work and published researches, and then contact them (write a brief email, but show them that you KNOW about what they are doing). If the professor is interested, he will reply you.

For the second, you simply fill out the preliminary application form (some dept need it, while some don't, check the website) and start praying If a professor is interested, you will get admission. But in this case, your case would be stronger, if you have been an outstanding student (like a position holder or somebody in top 5%) or you have some publications under your belt.

colud you please tell me abt the English Proefficency as i have done my Bachelors in English Medium but does not have IELTS 6.5
as My IELTS score is 6.0 would uni of Alberta Accepts my English Proefficency Letter r i have to re do IELTS???

From which university have you done your bachelors? If it is on the list of the FGSR list of exempted universities you don't need to reappear. If it is not, whether you have completed your whole education (primary to bachelors) in English, you need to appear in IELTS/TOEFL. My department requested an IELTS score of 7 with no band less than 6. Alhamdullilah i secured a 7.5 band.

You should check the requirements with ur concerned department and better email them regarding this. But it seems quite difficult that they will accept your score if it is below the required. If your overall score was 6.5 it was quite probable that they would consider it. But an overall 6 band implies that there might be a section with score less than 6 which is not acceptable to U of A. Even if no section scores less than 6, still it is pretty difficult. It is more likely that you need to reappear in IELTS.
