My two cents on the English speaking test: You need to keep calm during the speaking test. Present all your views with reasoning. Do not give one word answers and then become quite, give the logic/supporting argument behind your answer. Use a variety of words rather than repeating same words. Use connecting words in sentences. It is OK to pause between sentences to take a deep breath, the examiner won't penalize you for it.

Remember that the speaking test is only looking at whether you can communicate effectively and correctly in English. So, using simple but correct English should do the trick, no need to brainstorm about extra difficult words during the interview.

+1 if you found my post helpful please.

If you aren't sure of a question, or need time to think, say something like...

"hmmm, well..." and then make it look like you are considering what they are asking. You could also say "I haven't really thought of that before.." If you really aren't sure what they are asking, or need to stall for extra time say "in what sense do you mean" or something like that. It just gives you a bit more time to think up a reply without looking like you don't understand, or aren't sure.

Those were tricks I was taught when taking speaking tests in languages other than my mother tongue.

Heres my 2 cents

Practice facial expressions. Sit in front of a mirror. You are your best judge. Talk about everything under the sun. Your city. What are the main sources of employment in your province. How is the weather today. What is your favorite food etc.

Make sure you note how you look. Adjust to do well on these points - facial expression, gestures

On the day dont rush to answer, make slow and sure starts. And once the interviewer gives you control dont lose it. E.g. if she asks you what do you think about your country - list out 3 points no more. Then proceed to explain them in a confident manner. The interviewer will change the topic. Again slow confident start but build on points till the interviewer changes the topic again. This way you keep control with yourself for longer. The longer you have control, you can keep on comfortable points and use your strengths.

If you avoid stuttering, fumbling or pausing or the errmms and errrs and stick to the above points there is no reason that you will not score more than 7.5.

Source - I prepped for a week and scored 8.5 in speaking. English is not my native language.

Hello Damha,

I got high score in my IELTS except writing. Do you have any points in hand for me?

Thank you,
