pls help!should a copy of PR card be included in documents for PR card renewal?

CIC's application instruction says;

Step 1: Gather documents
What documents are required?

1.Your PR Card

If you are applying to renew your present card, you should retain it until you receive your new card. If you are applying to replace a damaged card, send the damaged card with your application.

If you are asked to present yourself at a local CIC office, you must bring with you the previous card and the original documents of the copies you have included with your application. You will be asked to destroy your previous card after you receive the new one.

Format: Original

what does "Format : Original " above means ?
what should I send them?
should I send them just a copy of PR card without sending the plastic card itself?

pls advise.

My PR card expired several years ago.
Wonder if I should include A COPY OF expired card, NOT original plastic card itself in application package.
Your advice would be very helpful !!

If you are applying to renew your present card, you should retain it until you receive your new card. If you are applying to replace a damaged card, send the damaged card with your application.

it means you have to send original card only if your applying for the replacement of damaged card.
Im assuming you are renewing your card so keep expired or to be expired until you receive your new card.
