Hi,
I'm currently staying in Canada on visitor visa basis ..My visitor visa is valid only for six months(i.e until Sept 30th,2010) .

I'm planning to apply for a workpermit as my husband works for a software concern here for the past 3 yrs.

Should I ask for visitor visa extension or apply for a temporary resident visa or apply for a workpermit alone ?

Are temporary resident visa and visitor visa the same ?

Is it sufficient if I apply for work permit alone.

Please help !!

G3, I am a newbie here but I can say with some confidence that the term Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) is the replacement term for a visitor visa. In fact, a TRV can be for a visitor, a student, or a worker. This I picked up from reading the endless mass of documents on the CIC site.

I recommend that along with using this excellent site, you also commit to reading all you can on the CIC site. I know it seems like you need to be a lawyer to figure it all out sometimes, but the more you read the better informed you are... Also, I am pretty sure you can apply for a work permit as a visitor but i don't know that for sure. I intend to have my wife apply as she goes for PR.

Best of luck!

If you husband's NOC is skilled (pretty sure, it is skilled) apply for a work permit. Attach a copy of your husband's WP and a copy of your marriage certificate with your application.

Thanks Job_seeker !!

Yes , my husband's occupation is a Software developer and it is an exempt from LMO .

All I wanted to know is ,Should I get my husband's extended work permit copy for me to apply a new work permit application ?

or Can I apply with his EXISTING work permit copy ??

How is it different from "open work permit" ?

Sorry If i sound naive, but am new to this country and its rules !!

Yes, you need your husband's work permit to obtain an open work permit. Your husband's work permit should be current and since you're applying on the basis of his WP, your OWP once approved, will be co-terminus with his so up to you if you want to wait for his extended WP.
