Hi,

I was 16 year old (minor) when I came here in Canada with my parents. I was from Dubai back then. Now, I’m already 20 years old. I’ve calculated my time spent here in Canada, and by 2018 I’ll be able to apply for Canadian citizenship.

My questions are:

1) Do I have to apply at the same time with my parents for citizenship? Or can I apply on my own already?
2) Do I still have to get a police clearance from Dubai or Philippines even if I was still a minor before we migrated here in Canada?

Thank you!

Hi,

1) No, you can apply, as an adult, on your own as soon as you qualify.
2) If you spent a total of 183 days in Dubai or Philippines or any other country other than Canada in the past 4 years (assuming current rules still apply in 2018), you will need to get a police certificate from the respective countries.

Most likely but unclear the police report rule will be dissolved with the new update.

Just within the 4 years, right? And if the rules change, is it going to be within 3 years? Thank you!

1. The OP only has to get Police Certificate if s/he spent 183 days or more in another country since turning 18.

You may need a police certificate from any country or territory that you have spent six months or more since the age of 18.

For example: if you visited, worked or lived in a country for two months, left for a few years, then returned for four months, that counts as spending six months there. In this case, you would need a certificate.

How would one interpret the meaning of "days spent"? Would a short day trip of several hours count as a "day spent" in the USA, especially in light of the fact that it is not considered a day "outside of Canada" for residency calculations?
