Hi noble people of this forum,

I hope you all are safe, and taking care of yourself and your family. I was hoping you could answer few of my queries.

I am a Canadian citizen, and my wife (Indian Citizen) moved here from USA last year in September. In October we applied for her PR + OWP. Her OWP was approved last week of December, and she recently passed her medical exam (mid-March)

Q1) Could someone suggest how long would it take from now to AIP and Decision Made? I understand timelines are case specific, but general timelines? Are applications still being processed? Her application is at CPC Mississauga.

She started working mid-February, and after a month of full-time employment, her employer temporarily laid her-off due to COVID-19.

Q2) Is she eligible for EI under new guidelines? If not, could we claim any other benefit?

She is covered under my employer medical insurance.

Q3) Is my insurance enough? Could we also apply for OHIP? If not, what are our other options?

Thank you so much for reading my questions, and I look forward to your response.

Regards.

Approved in principle / Approval in principle (AIP) : Your application is “approved in principle (AIP)” if:
  • you have received a letter from IRCC stating that you meet the permanent residence eligibility requirements, but
  • you still have to pass the medical, security and background checks for you and, if needed, your family members.
AIP letter for inland applications usually comes at the very end of the process, as soon as you get it, you can apply OHIP. But many people said that at that time you almost got your PR.
she eligible for EI under new guidelines , you should read EI guidelines. if she meet the conditions, she will get EI immediately.
You should check your employer medical insurance policy, what they insure.
What insurance are you looking for her?

1. Posted processing time is one year. Given the current situation, there will probably be delays.

2. You need to look at the specific requirements for the newly announced EI and emergency benefits.

3. She should have applied for OHIP when she got her job. She doesn't qualify now.

Note that the vast majority of employer plans require provincial health coverage first, as they are simply a top-up of regular provincial coverage, so without OHIP, she likely doesn't qualify to be on your plan. Employers make this mistake without checking with the actual underwriter of the plan. If she doesn't qualify for your plan and the insurer finds out, she will be required to reimburse any claims paid out.
