I would like to get a 6 month visitor's pass to stay in Canada with my girlfriend. I'm pretty anxious about the border crossing, and wondering what tips and suggestions you guys might have! I'm planning on traveling as lightly as possible (computer/clothes) to avoid getting turned around for trying to move in.
What should I tell/present the border guard? I won't have a lease or a job at that point, obviously don't really plan to say that. I'm planning on getting a letter from a place I can stay, though. Obviously convincing them that I'll be leaving is the main thing. Will I be able to get a visitor record, or will I have to go around the flagpole and hope for the best at the end of the visa?
I plan on moving up permanently eventually and don't really have intention to move back to the states. We are planning on getting married and understand this would facilitate the process, but don't want to just yet. As a last-ditch effort we would, but we feel getting married because we HAVE to feels kinda wrong.
My other concern is that four years ago I had a DUI. It is the only thing on my record. I understand that it's supposed to make you inadmissible to Canada for ten years.... but I just visited her for a week. I told the border patrol (at the airport no less, I flew in) about it and they said they couldn't find it on my record. I'm a bit curious if anyone has any similar experiences... if it's not on my record, and they can't find it at the airport, is this something that will come back to haunt me on the ground at the border?
Thank you very much for any and all help, and don't hesitate to ask any and all questions.
