For the photos to be sent with the application, can we write the date and event on the back of the photos or is there any other way that the CIC needs it? How have other people on this forum sent the explanation for each of the pictures?
 
yup do that
so it's easy for IO understand Ur pics
 
Yes, it is a good idea to explain what the photo is about...you can explain it on the back
 
Lots of people wrote the information on a Post-it Note and stuck that onto the front of the picture.

Some others have put the pictures into a word processing document and written captions under or beside them. That's what I am doing because all of my pictures are digital.
 
I printed my photos at Costco with the 'border' option which puts a 1/4" white border around the photo. I wrote the details on the border with a fine sharpie marker. I didn't want to do post-it notes in case they fell off, and I thought this way it would save the IO from having to flip the photos over to read the descriptions.

On each, I wrote who was in the picture, the date, the location, and any other significant detail. ie "Meeting parents for the first time"
 
You should definitely include information about the photos.
If they are digital, IMO the best way is to print them two to a page (regular A4 size paper) using Word. That way you can write a detailed explanation next to the photo. Include who is in it, where and when it was taken, and what it is showing. For example: This is Bob and Mary standing in front of the Eiffel Tower during their honeymoon trip to Paris. Photo taken March 3, 2010.

The visa officer wants to be able to look through the photos quickly - Post-It notes can fall off. I hope you don't have to go to an appeal, but if you do, anything written on the back of the photos will be lost - they photocopy all the evidence in the file to send it to the appeal board, but they don't bother photocopying the backs of the photos.
