hi there,

My common law partner is applying to sponsor me to come and live in Canada. I'm trying to fill out all the forms and have come across the section for Additional Family Information.
I have put down my partners details, my mums details, my fathers (as best I can being that we are estranged) and my sisters details.

Now im looking through the check list and it says that "you and each of your family members over the age of 18 years of age must complete there own copy of this form"
???? they are not coming to Canada with me so I dunno what that means?

then the checklist says "provide birth certificates for you and each of your family members."

really? i need to get copies of their birth certificates when its only me applying for PR?

if anyone can help me on this it would be much appreciated.

Only those family members need to fill out the forms who have been identified as family of the applicant. Applicant's father, mothers etc cannot be part of the immigrant's family as there are other programs through which they could be sponsored.
Similarly, only birth certificates of the members of the applicant are required with the application.

So basically what AMJ is saying that you only need to provide birth certificate for yourself.

The parents and siblings information is listed on the IMM 5406, no documents, i.e. birth certificates required.

ok great, thanks for your help!

I just have one more question regarding police certificates. As i was in Canada last year i need to provide a polce certificate for Canada as well as NZ. this could take a few months to get. Do i need to wait until i recieve them before i send my application package in? or will immigration request them only if they need them?

thanks again!

are you applying outland? if yes, then for sure police records are required documents for your applicaiton to begin processing. if they are not in the package, CIC will consider the application incomplete. At that point they will either return it or send a letter requesting the missing documents.

If you are applying inland, i am not sure if it's required to submit them upfront, since it takes significantly longer to get through the first stage. i would double check the checklist to be sure, and wait for senior members to confirm.

im applying outland... i read somewhere that it was possible to send in the application first to get it in the queue and send in criminal records once requested..
but i just wanted to confirm if that was true just in case :-\

no i doubt it. if that was the case, everyone would be doing it. it's pretty clear on the checklist that police records are required documents to start the processing. CIC is going to confirm both sponsor and applicant applications are complete before processing SA. I missed a required document in my application (as the applicant), and had to submit it before they would continue processing. What you've heard may be true for inland applications, though i don't know that for sure.

what you may be able to do is send in the application with a note attached stating the records have been ordered, and provide proof. as to whether or not that would delay the entire application process, i don't know, though i imagine it would.

No, you don't require a PCC from Canada. If one is required( CIC does it's own name check) CIC will request it. See: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/security/police-cert/north-america/canada.asp

How to obtain a police certificate - Canada

Do I need to provide a police certificate when applying for permanent residence?
Only in certain cases. The Canadian visa office will tell you if you need a Canadian criminal record check while your application is being processed.

Ignore the responses that say otherwise.

right! i forget that applicants don't need to submit canadian police checks. assuming your NZ one is ready, then no need to wait. if your NZ one isn't ready you can try sending in a letter to explain, or just wait until it arrives so that your application is complete.
