Permanent Resident Card - Apply or Wait?

My wife has arrived in Canada. She has been here since April. We have yet to receive a permanent resident card.

It was my understanding that the first card would be sent automatically, that it, that an application for a first card was not needed; indeed, the government's page (here:http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/prcard.asp) states that we should submit an application to get a card "if you: did not receive your card within 180 days of immigrating..."

I read elsewhere many months ago that it would take about 45 days to get the card.

So, I am wondering should I again spin the wheel of the Byzantine bureaucracy or simply wait? Is it necessary to submit an application for a permanent resident card?

Thanks,
MT

Processing times are posted on the CIC web site and for a new/first PR card it's currently 57 days: http://www.cic.gc.ca/EnGLIsh/information/times/index.asp

Note that the 57 days does not include mailing times.

You just need to wait. The card will be sent automatically - you don't need to apply.

I am on the same boat. I landed in April and my card has not arrived.

As long as your wife gave the CBSA officer that landed her a mailing address in Canada, then her card will arrive, eventually.

Thanks all; surprisingly, 20 minutes after I posted the question we received an email saying that they had started processing her card today.
For some reason the border guard who interviewed her said she had to submit an application for one whereas I read that she would be sent it automatically.
