During my work in canada 4 years back, my tax was deducted at source. I filed for one year but didn't for the last year. I can file it now,I think.

But what are the implications on my PR app. They only request for T4 I believe. Does CIC enquire with Revenue Canada? I have generally been diligent in filing my taxes. There has been only 2 instances in the past 10 years where I missed to file. Tax always paid though.

There is no impact to PR. However at some point Revenue Canada will likely come after you for the years you didn't file. It doesn't matter that you paid taxes - filing an income tax return is still a legal obligation. I would recommend you catch up on the years you missed rather than waiting for Revenue Canada to come after you. Once they come after you, it gets a lot more complicated.

Thank you for your response scylla. I would like to keep my records clean irrespective of the PR app though. I have missed (only) 2 of 14 tax filings.

Can someone provide me contact detail of a dependable tax accountant? Or any tax software that can handle back tax? The primary problem with majority of the tax softwares is that they require me to provide Canadian mailing address or doesn't handle scenario where people were not in Canada as of December 31st.

I would add that CIC doesn't ask for T4 only.

The official statement is like - employment records which might include T4, Notice of assessments, pay stubs whatever you have.

I have seen cases which got PR without NOA. But those were mostly because they applied right after completion of one year, where they would have only received T4. NOA takes much longer.

However, CIC might ask you for NOA if the year you are claiming for CEC is not recent.

I don't know if it is of any importance if you are not applying CEC.

But like scylla already mentioned, CRA can come after you at any point - where it might get difficult for you.

If tax is not filed, they do not have records of you having paid it. They would only validate deduction at source, once you file. So clear that out as fast as possible

Hello there,

From the tax perspective, you are not required to file a tax return unless your tax liability for the given tax year is greater than the taxes withheld at source, meaning you have a net taxes payable.

Best Regards
