Passport's Expiry Date

I am in the EE pool with 439 points, which means I may get an ITA in the next draw. My passport is set to expiry on the 6th of January, 2016.

Though I should be OK with my passport if an ITA comes through in the upcoming weeks, I am somewhat concerned bc I am wondering whether I need to have a passport with more than 6 months left when submitting my documents to CIC.

Those who have already received ITA, can you confirm whether CIC has laid out a rule around the validity of passports?

PS.: if I request a new passport now, my current passport will be cancelled - so should I get an ITA, I won't have all documents at hand.

Your landing time in Canada will expire when your passport does, or one year from date of medicals. In Canada our passports can be renewed within a week or two. I don't know about your country, but you will give yourself a longer range to make your arrival if you renew your PP now.

Is that so? I thought I could arrive in Canada with my expired passport (where my PR stamp will be) plus a valid passport - reason I say this is: if I have a long term US visa in my PP (say, a 10-year visa) and my passport expired last year, my visa remains valid and I can use it to enter America but obviously I also need to have an updated pp at hand. So the expiry date itself does not impact the validity of an American visa.

It would take around 4 weeks to get a new passport - which makes me wonder:

If an ITA comes through based upon my profile as-is now (which is associated with my current PP), I will have 60 days to submit my application - so I can request a new PP in this period and submit it with a brand new passport. Would that be acceptable?

Can I send a new passport to CIC. or do need to call them first.


1. Send a copy of the bio data pages to CIC. If you don't, you COPR will only be valid to the expiry date of your present passport.
