Hello, my daugther is 4 and we would like to get her passport because we will be moving to Canada within the next yr. hopefully. My husband is a Canadian citizen, I am American citizen, he is has landed immigrant status here for 5 yrs now. My question is, how long does it take to get her cert. of citizenship? Do we have to have this certificate in order to get her Canadian passport? If I understand correctly if she goes up with an American passport she will more or less be just visiting, and we want her to be able to stay permanantly. Thanks!

She is a Canadian Citizen by birth. Regardless of what other citizenship she holds. Showing up with an
American passport is no problem. Have her birth certificate that has you listed as the mother, and your passport.

They will still need to apply for proof of citizenship see: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/proof.asp You could also apply for a limited validity Canadian passport for her: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/manuals/bulletins/2009/ob154.asp

Coming from a POE standpoint, I am still correct.
But a birth certificate won't do her a lot of Canada if she is in Canada, she will still have to prove her citizenship for school, Medical Insurance. etc.
