passport request?

Hi.

I'm just wondering, during a spousal sponsorship, I've read that there are requests for passports. Whose passport do they take, the sponsor or the immigrant? Do they take the original or just a copy? Also, what is the reason they request the passport?

They request the passport(s) of the applicant(s) but not the sponsor. I think this only happens if a VISA needs to be placed in the passport, so it needs to be the original and not a copy.
