Passport request, sending passport back grace period

Hey Guys, I did my medical in October 2010, I'm waiting for passport request!! now the problem is I have to travel a month in Feb 2011. Based on previous processing times in Buffalo they may send a request by Jan or Feb, and I heard they just give 30 days grace time to send the passport back. Do you guys know if I delay the sending will it affect my application? I understand I should expect some delay but will it lead to rejection or should I contact them for extension time? if so should I just email them?

I have the same issue - but actually received my passport request today!

travelling back home from Nov 21 to Jan 12 but as it stands I will have to lodge my passport by Dec 8. I am sending them an email to explain my situation and request an extension to when I return to send it in.

I have my fingers crossed it will work - they came back with my application months faster than what I thought they would....
