Passport Request Question

I am not at this stage yet, but I have some questions regarding the passport request.
Why do they need your passport? What do they do with it? Does everyone have to send in their passports? What if you are from the US? I am from the US and my application is at the Ottawa VO, will they be requesting my passport when the time comes?

If you are from the U.S. you will not get a passport request. Those go to people who are from countries where a visa is needed to enter Canada - they get the visa attached and the COPR. In your case since the U.S. is visa-exempt, you will just get the COPR in the mail a few days after the decision is made. Mine took 10 days to reach me.

Thank you for the info. I had been wondering about this for awhile. It always seemed scary mailing out your passport. I am glad to know that I won't have to.

My question is:

If I am Outland applicant but once CIC request my passport, If I am in Canada with visitor visa, Can I send the passport to some office inside Canada?
