Outland family sponsorship, I'm the sponsor, my wife is american

got our AOR1 on Feb 12, wife got biometrics & medical instructions on the 18th and 19th. (She has since had both appointments).

On March 11th, we got a scary letter, "**Final Request**",
...

Passport/Travel Document: Records indicate that your passport has expired or will
expire within the next 12 months. Please apply for and then submit a copy of your new passport
which has greater than 12 months of validity remaining.
This must be received at this office by: 2020/04/10

As a final reminder, you must also complete the medical examination for you and all family members
within 30 days of this letter if you have not done so previously. You are required to have all your family
members be examined as part of the process of applying for permanent residence in Canada, even if
they will not come to Canada with the principal applicant. This examination of your non accompanying
dependent is in accordance with the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulation section 70(1)(e).

THIS IS YOUR FINAL REMINDER. NO FURTHER REQUESTS WILL BE SENT.

The above information/documents must be received in our office within 30 days from the date of this
letter.

If you are unable to submit the requested document(s) within the timeframe given, you must notify our office before the due date and you must provide an explanation and proof as to why you are unable to submit the documents within the given timeframe.

If we do not receive the requested information within the time allotted to you from the date of this notice, a decision will be made based on the information on your file, which could result in the refusal of your application.
Biometric appointment was on the 17th, and required her passport, so she couldn't send it in the mail for renewal until then.

As of March 19, the US is no longer providing expedited passport renewals (three weeks by mail, only barely would have been enough), and is no longer providing same-day services at their in-person Passport Agency locations. Current processing time is six to eight weeks, and "may be delayed".

As things currently stand, we haven't sent her passport for renewal yet (we wanted her to hold it in case she needed to cross to Canada, with coronavirus panic escalating as it is).

Has anyone received similar letters?

Has anyone had to make use of this clause? If so, what did you send, and how did it go?
If you are unable to submit the requested document(s) within the timeframe given, you must notify our office before the due date and you must provide an explanation and proof as to why you are unable to submit the documents within the given timeframe.
Not sure how scary this is for our application. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks kindly,
Ben

Nothing to be scared about. Apply for the new passport and send proof of the application and the expected timeline to IRCC explaining the delay.
