Hi Im a permanent resident under protected persons and need to replace my pr card as it expired a while ago. The problem is that in order to apply for a new pr card I need a valid passport but if I apply for a new passport it will be consider as reavailment. I don't know why they ask you for a valid passport when they know it will trigger a cessation of status. What do I do ?

You are not applying for a new PR card, you are applying to renew your PR card.

Do you have Refugee Travel Document (RTD) ? That is your travel document in place of your passport from the country that you need protection from.
You shouldn't apply to renew your passport.

One (1) main identity document
A photocopy of one of the following:

  • your valid passport or travel document or
  • the passport or travel document you had when you became a permanent resident (if applicable, include the passport page that was stamped when you arrived in Canada and became a permanent resident) or
  • the certificate of identity or travel document issued by the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada or a foreign country.

Thank you for replying . Yes I send copies of my expired passport I used when I came her and they send back my application saying that it was not acceptable as main ID. I didn't add a note I was a protected person. Maybe that's why I got it sent back. I'll add a note next time . Thanks
