Passport & Marriage Certificate

Hi All,

I recently got married in Ontario & I am currently expecting my Marriage Certificate to reach me latest by 1st week of July. I need to submit my application by 2nd week of August. Now, my questions:

1. Do I really need to change my 'Marital Status' in Passport? Only Marriage Certificate won't do?

2. I inquired about processing time for updating my passport at my consulate. They said it takes 4-6 weeks to update any information on passport. Should I be getting that done as soon as I receive my marriage certificate or I can send my current passport only following a cover letter stating that I've applied for the marital status change in the passport?

Changing status on passport does not have a great deal effect on the processing. You should update the passport if you can however.

Thanks. I can but this will delay my process and I might have to apply for an additional PCC.

For proof of marriage, CIC only cares about the marriage certificate. The marital status listed in your passport won't have any effect on your PR application. Most countries don't even list marital status in passports. You can use your passport in the app as it is; there is no need to submit a cover letter.
