Hi All,

I became a PR in May 2006. I have been in Canada ever since (not a single day absent/did not even go to the US). My passport expired in April 2008 and I have not been able to renew since the embassy responsible for my area is far away. I do not have a valid passport right now, only the one I used to land (with the PR Visa in it and expired April 2008). my questions are:

1. ) Is this going to be a problem?

2. ) what documents do i need to provide to prove i never left Canada since my passport expired ( I alwasy though an expired passport is proof enough since you can't travel on one)? Am I going to be asked for this proof?

3. ) don't they have a computer system or database to track PRs going in and out of the country?

Thanks in advance.

I don't think this will be a problem.
If you renew your passport, there will be note in your expired passport somewhere, stating that it was renewed and/or cancelled. The old passport is likely cut on the cover.

Thanks for replying imigrate. should i be preparing documents from the date my passport expired to the present just in case i am asked? do you think they will ask for these documents at all? if so what would be the best to provide to show that i have been here all along? someone here said that bank statements are best, but what else could i use?

I might just be jumping the gun... but then again, i want to be prepared.

Thanks again

Dear All,

I am a PR Card holder for the province of Manitoba. I have landed in March 02, 2019 in Winnipeg, Manitoba and received PR card within 21 days and later on left Canada for my home country due to some other reason. Since then I have been living in my home country. However, I am planning to settle there in the February, 2022 and will meet my PR obligations. However, my passport validity period will expire on 03, April , 2022. Do I need to renew my passport in order to travel to Canada as well as to pass through the immigration back here in my home country. If I need to renew my passport, should I need to inform the CIC immediately and do I must the passport where there was stamp of PR visa. Any advice is highly appreciated .

Thanks and Regards.

Hi,

According to the information you provided, you hold a valid PR card. As long as you maintain your PR status by staying in Canada for 2 yrs out of a 5-year window, you’re fine in terms of physical presence in Canada. However, in order to travel internationally, you need to have a valid passport. So, renew your passport before traveling.

You don’t need to inform IRCC that you renewed your passport. However, keep the expired passport, because you will need it when you apply for citizenship in the future. (if you’re planning to).

Regarding your last question, no, you don’t need to show the PR visa/stamp in your passport when you arrive in Canada. The only things you need is your valid PR card and a valid Passport.
