passport expiration and validity of study permit and visa

asking on behalf of a friend:

her passport and study permit expires may of 2017, however she intends to go home end of the year. since her home country requires 6 months passport validity, she is planning to renew it when she is back home since its alot cheaper.

Now question is will she able to come back to canada january 2017 if her study permit and visa expires may 2017. Note that both study permit and visa are associated with her old passport. if she renews it, can she travel back by showing the officer study permit associated with old passport as well as the visa. thank you.

*edit: the years should be 2016 not 2017. so her study permit, visa and passport expires may 2016 and she wishes to renew passport december 2015 back home and travel back with her new passport and study permit plus visa associated with her old passport.
