Parents Sponsorship

Hello all, I find this blog very useful so thanks in advance for your feedback.

My parents finally received their PR (after almost 6 years) and they're ready to land in Canada sometime soon. However, my father must return to his birth country for about 3 months to finalize their affairs (sell their property, vehicle, etc. -they were not expecting to get their PR this year).

two questions:
1) when they land, is there any way he can get his PR card expedited so he has it before he leaves Canada?

2) will this request look strange and could it hurt the sponsorship?

thank you.

There is no way to expedite the PR card. The expedite option is only available for renewals.

He will need either his PR card or a Travel Document to return to Canada assuming his passport is not visa exempt. If his PR card isn't ready by the time he is ready to return, then he will have to apply for a Travel Document through the local visa office.

Typically a PR card takes 2 months to arrive to Canadian address.

So he could return to his home country, and after his PR card arrives in Canada and someone receives it for him, it can be couriered to his address in home country. Only problem with this is if he needed to return to Canada before the PR card came, in which case the previously mentioned travel document would be required which is coordinated through the local visa office in his home country.

thanks for your quick replies.

...when you refer to a Travel Document, do you mean a Visitor Visa? (he is from a country that requires Visa).

Are you sure that expedite PR Cards are only for renewals?

I read the CIC website and I found the "urgent processing of a PR" but it doesn't distinguish if it's for renewal or for a brand new one.

thanks again.

No - we aren't referring to a visitor visa. We are referring to this:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/travel.asp

Yes - we are sure you can't request urgent processing for new PR cards.
