40 months is the amount of time it currently takes for the first stage of the application process (assessment of sponsor) to be completed.

The application is then transferred to the local office for secong stage processing (assessment of person being sponsored). The approximate time lines for the second stage are posted here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/perm/fc-parents.asp

So your total processing time is: 40 months + second stage processing length of time.

Does this help?

Thank you. But it is terrible. It means that it takes 7 years total . Is it something to speed up this process?

The timelines are insanely long and really not very fair but there is no way to speed up the application as there are so many in the same position.

I don't believe there is any way to speed up the first stage of processing (i.e. the first 40 months).

For the second stage, the number of months displayed reflects 80% of applications completed. This means that some applications are processed somewhat faster. I would assume that applications are processed faster if the paperwork is complete and there are no problems with the police certificates, medical, background checks, etc. Hopefully others will comment if they have helpful information to provide.
