Parent sponsorship - income requirement 3 tax years

Hello wise ones - just wondering if someone could shed some light on this - can't seem to find the answer anywhere.

I have PR and want to sponsor my parents and my wife's parents however my understanding is that in order to do this we need 3 years worth of tax returns to prove we can support them:

'If you’re invited to apply, you have to provide proof that you meet the income requirements for each of the 3 tax years before the date you apply.'


We have only been in Canada for approx 18 months but have well paid jobs so have sufficient funds already.

Does anyone one know if there is a way around this? - can we apply with only 1-2 tax returns?

There is no way around the 3 year requirement. Refusal is guaranteed.

Also once I have three years worth of returns am I able to sponser two sets of parents (mine and my in laws)?

Yes, the only option at this time is the super visa.

Once you have 3 years of tax returns, you can sponsor your parents and your wife can sponsor hers (you can co-sign each other's applications). Keep in mind that you have to be selected out of the lottery in order to sponsor. You'll need to have enough income in all three years to cover the two of you + any children you may have + your parents & any dependents + your wife's parents & any dependents

She just gave birth to a baby this Sept., and just started taking EIs this month(Oct). She plans to stay on EI for a full year. In her case, is she still eligible to sponsor her parents?

As long as she continues to meet LICO in 2021, then yes.

For 2018 and 2019, she would need to have LICO to cover 4 people (assuming she is married with one child). For 2020 and 2021 she will need to have LICO to cover 5 people.

She can include her spouse's income.

The question, is maternal EI considered as income for tax and immigration purpose? If not, her income next year is highly unlikely to meet the provisioned 2021 LICO
Also, given the limited quota, in case her application won't get selected this year, she won't meet the income requirements of 3 consecutive years in the future draws. Or she can SKIP the year 2021 as giving birth and not having enough income is a special parental case, not due to the loss of job?

She can't "skip" a year. There is no exception given for being on parental leave. LICO must be met each year.

All income reported on line 150 of the return can be included. To the best of my knowledge, EI is reported on line 150 of the return.
