Hi,

I am a paediatric intensive care nurse looking trying to understand my options for immigration to Canada – probably Ontario.

My background is a little bit complicated:
  • I am German and completed my nursing qualification in Germany – this was vocational training rather than a degree
  • I moved to the UK in 2005 and have since worked in the NHS has a registered nurse
  • I became a British citizen 2 years ago part of which was demonstrating competency in English
I have a few questions that I am hoping people might be able to help with:
  1. Is paediatric nursing recognised as a separate qualification and registration like it is in the UK?
  2. Are paediatric intensive care nurses in demand?
  3. Will my qualifications be accepted as comparable or will I need to pass NCLEX?
  4. Will I need to take the English test?
  5. Is NNAS the only route for recognition? From everything I have read it seems like an expensive and long process to get a non-comparable determination!
  6. When I came to the UK there were specialist nursing recruitment agencies for overseas nurses that worked with candidates for free. Are there any like this in Canada?
  7. Is there an optimal route to fast track getting registered as a nurse?
Many thanks in advance!

I'll help with a few questions.

If you want to immigrate, recommend you start by researching the Express Entry program. This is a points-based program and yes, you will need to take an English test to qualify - this is mandatory. I would plan on the process taking about a year assuming you have enough points to be selected.

To work as a nurse in Canada, you'll need to be registered through CNO if Ontario is your target. Details are below:
