Hi everyone,

I was successfully approved for a Closed Work Permit and my partner for an Open Work Permit (he is considered as my common-law partner).

He has managed to secure a job offer (NOC A) in Canada already.

Now, I have received a better compensation offer from another employer in Canada but I am restricted to work for my sponsor as of now.

-> Would it be possible for me to apply at the Port of Entry (Toronto Airport) for a SOWP (under my partner's own SOWP) ? I am asking if it is possible to get an immigration officer to switch my status from Closed Work Permit to SOWP.

-> Are immigration officers at Toronto Airport able to operate work permits and open work permits onsite immediately?

-> If both responses are no, what would you recommend me to do to be able to work for any employer asap?

Many Thanks for your help and support.

No. I answered a very similar question very recently. I assume this is the same person. @scylla @canuck_in_uk @b @zardoz @Bluetruck can you assure this person that there is no other way.

Not in this situation.

There are no fast options. The only way to do this is for one partner to get a LMIA and get a closed work permit and then the other person get approved for an SOWP. You will just have to stick with the current job even if it pays less.

Hi,

Thank you - sorry for the redundancy.

I am the actual person employed under the closed work permit, and I had a hard time clarifying this issue over the phone with immigration consultants and lawyers so I decided to post the same thread than my partner's. @Snake143

I appreciate your response and I do get the point - however I am not convinced by the wording on the CIC website which gives room to believe that I might apply for a SOWP if I provide my partner's job contract and pay slips.

However all in all, it doesn't look like a positive outcome here!

Many thanks.

IRCC doesn't issue SOWPs based on an SOWP. The original permit for an SOWP must have been issued independently. You can apply and hope IRCC makes a mistake and issues it, as I recall that happening before.
