I recently received my ITA and will shortly be filing my required documents for the PR
I was on a student and work visa in Canada where I incurred a debt of $6000.this was left unpaid when I left Canada in 2016
Will this in anyway affect my chances of getting my PR approved ?

The debt will still be owing and they may well come after you. I hope they are "nice" creditors...

Any debts must be listed. Would be best for you to contact creditors now to start arranging payments or pay it off completely. If you get PR you could struggle to rent an apartment, get a phone, qualify for a credit card, etc.

So is there anything I can do about it.
Like if I show them I have enough proof of funds to cover up my bad debt and still have $13000 to survive will that be ok and increase my chances of getting a PR ?
Start paying it off or provide a copy of information regarding your payment plans with your creditors.

No, it will not affect your PR application. It can affect the status of your POF if the funds that are part of your POF are encumbered by the outstanding Canadian debt.

However, your outstanding Canadian debt will affect (already has) your Canadian credit score and may make it difficult for you to obtain housing leases, credit cards and loans. Also, creditors and their recovery agencies may start bombarding you with calls or visits or legal notices as soon as you are back in Canada.

Also, credit checks (Canadian and non-Canadian) are NOT part of an applicant's background check. Also, outstanding debts is NOT a criminal offence in Canada. So, chill.

Not quite right. Credit checks are in fact part of standard background checks in some industries for employment (e.g. financial services). I've had candidates fail the credit check portion of the background check in the past and this be the reason why a job offer has been withdrawn by HR. For jobs with any of the big banks, a credit check is a default part of the background check.

I was talking about applications for PR and not job applications.Yes, credit scores are part of background checks especially in the finance and banking sector, where there is a very good chance that you would be surrounded by loads of money.

Do I need to submit my Canadian debt details in my proof of funds ?
