Hey,
Need some help
My fiancé lives in america seeking asylum case. I’m Canadian citizen. Planning to get married in May-June.
*Am I able to apply Outland sponsorship after we get married ? Is this possible
* has anyone done this before ? Was it successful? Success rate ?
* does it matter if we don’t do religious ceremony and only do court marriage and reception?
* how can we prove our relationship genuine?
* processing time ?
TIA

- Yes, you can sponsor your spouse outland. Make sure you fully declare your partner's immigration history in the sponsorship application.
- Yes, there are people on this forum who have done this but I'm not sure how you would find those threads. There's no success rate anyone can give you. The chances of success will depend on the strength of your application. The application may fall under increased scrutiny due to the refugee claim in the US so you want to include strong evidence to prove the relationship is genuine.
- It generally doesn't matter unless people normally have elaborate religious ceremonies as part of your culture. If you are having a court marriage, then you should have a reception with a number of family and friends attending. Don't make it super small.
- Review the application guide to see what you need to submit and also read through the posts on this forum. I'm assuming you have known each other for a while and have spent time in person a number of times already.
- Processing time is hard to guess. Generally plan on at least a year but you may be waiting longer based on your spouse's profile.

Once PR is approved for your spouse, make sure you understand the consequences of abandoning the refugee claim the US. It's possible your partner may not be able to re-enter the US for a decade.

Hi @Jess24 could you please give an update on the situation? Im in a similiar situation, CAD citizen, with significant other pending asylum in the USA for many years now due to backlog.
