The title says it all...I'm a Canadian citizen and am submitting an application to get proof of citizenship for my son who was born outside of Canada. I'm required to submit my original birth certificate. I'd like to know whether CIC will return it as it's the only one I have and from what I recall it was a real pain getting it.

Thanks!

They don't allow you to submit a notarized photocopy of the certificate?

Sure they do, the OP probably didn't read the instruction manual http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/CIT0001ETOC.asp

If this application is for your first citizenship certificate

Then provide clear and legible certified copies of your documents

Right...I'm a bit confused. The instruction manual says that but the embassy here told me to send the original and that I'd get it back once the application is complete.
