Hi All There,

I need to sponsor my child born in USA and therefore I will come to Canada in August for good and apply for sponsorship. However, despite filling Canada Taxes, I have never had Canada related income, except for child payments my elder son is entitled to. So my question is do I need to submit Option C Printout of my latest Notice of Assessment, or it is required only when I sponsor other people, not my son? My understanding is that to sponsor my son I do not need to meet income requirements, and Option C Printout is used for confirming income. Hence, since I do not need to show income, then I do not need to obtain Option C Printout to sponsor my son? I am correct or I need anyway submit this Option C Printout?

Also both numbers they give for requesting this printout, inside for Canada and international from outside do not work when I call from USA. Do you have any other numbers for CRA to request this printout?

the option c form is not to prove income, as there is no income requirement for dependant/spouse sponsorship. from what i understand the option c form shows CIC whether the sponsor has drawn on social welfare. If it's a required document on the checklist, then it is REQUIRED. Any canadian who has filed taxes can receive an option c form. It doesn't have to do whether you are working in canada or not. Since you HAVE been reporting taxes, you will be able to receive it.

IF you can't optain the option c form, the checklists offers an alternative. This includes an explanation and 12 months of paystubs. Again, they are NOT checking for income, they are confiming that the sponsor has not been on welfare in the previous 12 months.

One way or another, something needs to be submitted for that particular requirement. If it's not, the application can be deemed "incomplete" and it will not be processed until it is complete. CIC will not be able to get the information they are looking for directly from the CRA, so if you want the application to be successful, SOMETHiNG needs to be submitted for that requirement. It doesn't seem the online version is accepted by CIC, so it must be the original printout sent by mail.

The CRA may not accept calls from outside canada, so you will need to call from a canadian number somehow, or have someone else do it for you. They will ask for personal information during the request, so it's important the person calling has that info.

if you have filed your 2013 taxes, then it's suggested to wait for it to be ready. the last thing you want to happen is for them to request it after you've already submitted the paperwork. it takes about a month for it to be ready once the taxes are filed.

My husband has successfully called CRA from outside Canada (Germany) and he requested the Option C form to be sent at out German address. We received it within 2 weeks.

Make sure the numbers you have dialed are the correct ones, and you called within working hours: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/cntct/ntrntnlnqrs-eng.html

And just like rhcohen2014 said, you need either the Option C printout or paystubs for the last 12 months. This is to show that you have not received welfare in the last year.

I'm very curious to know which "child payments" you have been receiving while you have been living outside of Canada.

That is a great question, Canuck, especially when you consider the OP has never stayed in Canada since obtaining his PR in 2011. *shrugs*
