Hello.

I'm a Canadian resident. My wife is American. She does live here in Ontario.

Banks and credit unions around here say you have to be a Canadian resident with a Social Insurance Number to open an account now either as single account for her or joint account for us?

Has anyone recently opened a single, or joint bank account?

We are North of Toronto but wondering if maybe should try banks in Toronto?

Thanks.

I recently opened a single account at RBC

You should be OK to open a bank account at any Canadian bank as a PR. Also, you can access your accounts and funds at any branch of the same bank. For example, TD has branches all over the GTA so you can go to any one of them. If you need a safety deposit box or something like that, it will be tied to your "home branch" where you first open the account. But other than that you can see an advisor or access services at any branch of that bank.
