As I know, you can't do other jobs until you get your open work permit. Don't take any risk, it is not worth. Be patient! and Cheer up !

Hi, I was in similar same situation as you. I sent my application in, and lost my job 2 weeks later because my employer couldn't afford to pay me anymore. It was in last JULY. Since then I can NOT get an other live-in job because people think since I am so "close" to getting my papers I will just leave them after I got my papers so they don't want to hire me, they hire a nanny who just came to the country. (who of course can leave them and give them 2 weeks notice the same way) and me, who would stay there for couple of years can not get the job. *siiiigh* So from experience I am saying that unless you have a LOT of money put aside for bills and a place at friends where you can stay until you get your papers do NOT leave your current job. Just do it and at least you get money every week and have a place to stay warm and put your head down on a pillow. Hugs and be strong!

HI AgiHun, so you mean, we can stay unemployed while waiting for our OWP as long as we can afford it?, because I heard somewhere(not really sure if true) that we need to stay employed until we get our OWP... because Im waiting for my OWP right now, I just submitted last december, and I'm just begging my employer to keep me till I get my owp cause she's on mat.leave..

I called immigration before my work permit expired to my old employer and told them that I don't know what to do cuz I didn't find a new job yet...but told them that I applied to my open permit 5-6 months before....
The officer said not to worry, you don't have to leave the country when you are waiting, you have implied status as long as the decision gets made in your case. He said I can stay at my boyfriend but I can not work for anybody else. If I want to work then I have to find a new employer, they have to sponsor me until I get my open permit.
I personally didn't have a choice as my employer told me to move out in 2 weeks, couldn't afford to pay me. I am staying at my boyfriend's place. Nobody wanted to hire me cuz of the paperwork. They don't see the point in hiring you in the LCP for 8-9-10 months and as soon as you get your open permit you are free to work anything you want and in their eyes you will leave them even if you say you are planning to stay for at least a year. They will hire somebody who just started the LCP or who has an open permit already. So if you are ready for the loooooooooooooong wait and have some money put aside then you can leave your current employer. Hope it helps:)

hi I have the same situation... can we stay unemployed while we are waiting for our Open Work Permit? i have completed my 24 months and i submitted my application for OWP and PR last October 2010.... my employer will terminate my employment on March 31 2011, because he said he is going to lose his job... i don't want to be tied up for another 1 or 2 years to another employer and most of the employers are looking for a long term, so what are we gonna do? is it okay to remain unemployed while waiting for the OWP which is going to be just 2-3 months away?

There is a two-4 week notice clause and if you can find an employer who might be willing to help you then why not apply for the WP. You don't know that the OWP is two or three months away. With what CIC has been doing, processing went form 5-6 months to 11-12 months. Just make sure that you have In Canada legal status while waiting for your OWPs.

and since we are unemployed while waiting for our Open Work Permit, and we are just staying to some relative's or friend's house while waiting, how are they gonna send the approval for the Open Permit? are they gonna send it to our previous employer? or do we need to update our mailing address so they will know where to send the approval?

thanks for you reply Job_Seeker...

my work permit is still valid until December 2011...

the rules says you have 4 years to complete your 24 months employment to be eligible to apply for OWP and PR.... and i have complied with that requirement...

if i lost my employment but my work permit is still valid, will it make me out of status here in Canada just because the employer terminated my employment?

i have complied with the 24 months employment, submitted my papers for the application of OWP and PR and is currently now on process, and suddenly the employer terminated my employment, will the Immigration stop processing my application for OWP and PR because i am unemployed even if i complied with the requirement under the rules?

You're good till the expiration of your WP. Hopefully by that time you would have received your OWP and PR (if you are single).

I called immigration for the same reason. They said you have implied status until the decision is made in your case you can stay in the country, it is legal even if your work permit and everything expired. Don't worry just make sure you have a place to sleep at and food to eat. I don't have a job for the past 11 months, I am waiting for my owp sooooooooooo bad so I could get a job. Be strong!
