Guys, Most of you already might have heard this, but Ontario has put a ban on international students.

https://www.cicnews.com/2021/04/canada-to-suspend-entry-of-international-students-to-ontario-0417973.html#gs.101o1ui

Following a meeting with the provinces on April 29, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that international students will temporarily not be allowed to come to Ontario.

In a press conference, Ontario Premier Doug Ford told reporters he pleaded with the prime minister to do more to combat the spread of coronavirus. He asked for the federal government to put a stop to the arrival of international students.

“Because currently Ontario is the only province to request it, we are happy to work more closely with them,” Trudeau said in a press conference.

The press statement was that they will "formalize the request". They did not say they would grant said request.

They may, but at this point they have not done so.

Fall is the largest intake, if implemented and it drags in Ontario all programs including in-person/hybrid will move online, colleges and universities will be half full

PLease don't spread false news. This is not accurate, it's just a politician blowing off steam. Nothing has changed.
Formal communiques has its stages, Canadian medias are not like in those countries that make up stories and later refused by the Government. If covered in media, most likely next is official communication. Matter fact ON is receiving most international students than any other Province, India top the list. With situation in Ontario and India, the least i can suggest is “Politician are blowing off steam”.

Especially given the fact that Qatar has moved their PCR test to their transit area and are now allowing Indians to transit through Doha Canada is still receiving a large number of Indian international students arriving. Many arriving from India will have been infected after their covid test before departure. Our ICUs are already past capacity we can’t afford to have another variant take hold. Thos will be a temporary measure. This isn’t forever.

You can't take indirect flights between India and Canada, unless you are entering an another country in between, in which case you would likely do the test in that country.

Besides, I'm not sure how scientific these bans are. Is flying with strong 3+11 day quarantine much riskier than public transport? I feel there is a large element of blame game going on. Dubai for eg. has had air travel fully open for everyone including tourists and transit passengers from all countries without quarantine since around a year now(other than recent one way, 10 day ban) and they haven't been affected nearly as much as Canada, which is hesitating to even allow essential and non-discretionary travel.

UAE doesn't offer free healthcare to a large proportion of the people in their country so there is less of a cost and risk. The government can also decide to put people into isolation without needing permission. The ban of India and Pakistani passengers flying directly into Canada (because Canada couldn't ban the non direct travelers or they would have banned them too) was because so many were arriving and testing positive for covid. That puts further strain on our already strained healthcare system and many people weren't quarantining properly and spreading covid to their whole families and even some spread covid to the community. Canada is trying to prevent the new variants from taking hold in Canada and trying to prevent more cases because places like Ontario are getting very close to needing to decide who gets care and who doesn't.

I feel the recent ban on direct flights was fair. However, I would like to see scientific data to show how many cases could be attributed to air travel. Blaming 1.22 million cases on couple of flights seems like a stretch, doesn't it?

I dont see blame games but Country’s obligation to protect its population. Dubai Model cannot be used in every country and each country decides on its own following expert recommendation. If all people were complying to 11+3 days, situation could be different, somehow. I see there are strict measure in public transit and less exposure because of the capacity. Transit bus have given authority to refuse passenger without wearing mask, and are allowed to carry limited passenger...
