Online Classes for Fall 2021

Hi everyone! Fall 2021 will be my last semester as an international student here in Canada. I will be applying for PGWP after and my concern is that 3 out of my 5 courses are online. Will that affect my PGWP application? I know that there has been exceptions for online classes due to the pandemic but when I asked my school about it they said that since our school is going to have in-campus classes, we need to take all our classes in-campus because it may affect our PGWP application. Most of the classes my program offers are still online and some of the courses are only delivered online on Fall semester. It’s really confusing because when you read the CIC website there’s really no specific info that we SHOULD only take inclass right now but the answer from my school makes it sound like if there going to be an issue when I apply for PGWP they can’t help out. Any opinions/answers will greatly be appreciated. Thank you.

Online classes will not affect your eligibility for PGWP.

It may however, affect your eligibility to claim CRS points for Canadian education, depending on what percentage of your studies was completed online.

Distance learning

Under normal circumstances, all distance learning courses completed outside Canada are excluded from the time accumulated towards the length of the post-graduation work permit, and 50% of a student’s courses must be completed in Canada and in person.

The following temporary policy changes have been made to better accommodate eligible international students who have completed distance learning in or outside Canada.

All students who were enrolled in a PGWP-eligible program in progress in March 2020 or who started a program of study from spring 2020 up to and including the fall 2021 semester are not required to complete 50% of their program (or programs) of study in Canada. Up to 100% of their program can be completed online from outside Canada.

Time spent studying outside of Canada can be counted towards the overall length of the post-graduation work permit until December 31, 2021. Any time spent studying outside of Canada after December 31, 2021 should be deducted from the length of the post-graduation work permit.
