Hi

Myself and my partner are looking to move to Canada. We both have British passports but are living in New Zealand at the moment.

We have heard through friends that you need to have lived in the UK for the last year in order to apply as a British citizen. Is anyone able to confirm whether this is true or not?

Thanks very much.

The requirement for a working holiday visa is that you are a citizen of a country that qualifies for the Working Holiday Program and who normally lives in your country of citizenship. So if you applied now, your visa would be denied because you do not live in the UK

Incorrect. From IEC UK http://tinyurl.com/6g8xu8s

In recent years, three significant changes were made to the International Experience Canada initiative for British citizens:

British Citizens will no longer be required to demonstrate habitual residency (i.e. that they have lived continuously in the UK).
Applicants from the United Kingdom are allowed two participations in their lifetime (including through SWAP’s partner BUNAC). Exception: participations prior to the 2011 quota year do not count towards the allowable maximum of two participations.
Starting in the 2014 quota year, holders of a ‘Channel Islands’ (Jersey, Guernsey) passport are eligible to apply.
