Hi guys,

Please I need a quick answer to this question as I'm trying to up my points where possible.

My wife worked in Nigerian as a Nail Technician with a reputable Beauty Company in Lagos, Nigeria. She was trained for one year prior to joining the company and was issued a certificate of training for that purpose.

Could this count as apprenticeship? and hence an additional 3 points to me. She completed 12 years primary/secondary education in Nigeria and sat for the Certificate exam too.

Please advice.

Thanks

A one-year apprenticeship, and at least 12 years of full-time or full-time equivalent studies gives 3 points

Thanks Maatis,

But my worry is how would they verify this. She has a certificate to prove this but I'm a little bit concerened that they may think that since it's just a Beauty company, they might recognise the certificate.

What do you think

I was just thinking, is it recognised by any governmental institution. Is that job regulated?

I don't know whether they will accept it but lets see what others say.

Hello Maaties,

You are the best :)

When they say non university diploma, can we assume it to be from an institute not accredited/affiliated to any university in the country? If not, what's the difference from the university and non university diploma?

Mine is from an institute not affiliated to any university, but the diploma itself was validated by the Cambridge International Examinations UK. And upon completion, we did get a diploma certificate but it did not have any indication about the CIE UK. Ever since we were trying to get it done(at least try and get the diploma certificate attested by the CIE UK), in vain. Now it looks like the institute has shut shop(offices are closed, no phones working, no emails) and some students have taken up legal pursuit against them for abrupt closure without issuing diplomas etc.. When i contacted CIE, they confirmed that they had affiliation with the institute from 2006 to 2008(my study was from 2006 to 2007), and that all students were eligible for a diploma certificate from CIE UK, after the course. But they did not receive a complete students registration information, and so they will not be able to help me with a certificate as they do not have my name in the list. Now i am left with a certificate from the institute along with 2 semesters transcripts. Will i be able to get the 3 points under spouse education?

Thanks,

Indira Prabhakaran.

non-university diplomas are those granted by institutions that are not traditionally universities like colleges, etc. Sometimes, there are courses called diploma in business as opposed to bachelor in business.

Mine is from an institute not affiliated to any university, but the diploma itself was validated by the Cambridge International Examinations UK. Is your institute recognised by any governmental authorities? It helps when they are recognised by a governmental authority. I am not saying you won't get the points if it is not, i just don't know about it. It doesn't have to be affiliated to any universities.

Thanks,

Indira Prabhakaran.

Thanks Maaties,

Would it help if i print out the email communication from CIE UK about this and also the articles in media stating that abrupt closure of the institute, along with my notarized transcripts and diploma certificate?

In any case, we need those 3 points :(

Thanks,

Indira Prabhakaran.

Hello Maaties, few more before i go :)

1. Prab(my huby) has his Bachelors in Architecture and the next degree is PG Diploma in Hospitality Management and the next one is MS in Hospitality Management. The reason for this change was, He intended to do an MBA course in UK first only to find out getting an Architect License in UK to practice was next to impossible, and so he switched his focus to Hospitality Management. We even managed to get a work permit processed in UK for 5 years with that Masters degree. Would this focus shift from Architecture to Hospitality cause a concern for the VO?

2. Next as i mentioned earlier, we were able to secure a 5 yrs work Visa in UK and we had to come back to India to get the resident visa stamped. [Note: Work permit and resident permit are 2 different things for Home office in UK]. Unfortunately we were not able to return to UK to take up the job immediately after the Visa stamping due to personal reasons. When we contacted the employer again in 1.5 months time, they said they will not be able to hold the job for him for many months(which was reasonable as we got the offer in end of March and it took about 3.5 months to process the work permit and get the visa stamped). Long story short, we did not get the 5 year work visa activated at all and it expired last month Sad. Would this cause a concern for the VO? I mean if we did get an opportunity to work for 5 yrs in a country like UK, and did not use it, would the VO be reluctant/ give it a second thought to give us the PR status for Canada?

3. When providing personal history on the schedule 1 form, how exact do we have to provide the timeliness? I mean if Prab was a Student in UK for 5 years, he attended 3 courses and completed 2 of them. He took breaks in between the courses(between course 1 and 2 and course 2 and 3), like Vacation to Germany and India. Should i just mention 1 line from 2000 to 2005 his activity was Student and finish it or give a detailed breakup of actual attendance in colleges, vacations, etc..

Thanks,

Indira Prabhakaran.

1) it shouldn't.
2) no
3) if it is 3 different degrees/diploma, you should break it down. In my application, i mentioned every single vacation. I don't think one has to do that. But if someone spends a substantial time on vacation, say 1 year, they should mention that for sure.

Maaties,

On looking at the companies website, it appears that they are recognised by the government---hence their new name as an "A beauty Academy"......

As a subsidiary of a well know group of company in Nigeria which of course is registered, one would have thought that this could be recognised as a form of Appreniticeship.

On a second thought, must the apprenticeship be for a minimum of 1 year.

thanks
