hi everyone,
i recently received my working holiday visa and will be entering Toronto on June 30, 2013.
however, before i go to Toronto, i'll be visiting my family in the Philippines for about a week (so my flight schedule will be: Syd -> Manila -> Toronto)
i've decided to take up a visitors to canada insurance from june 30, 2013, however i need travel insurance for the time spent in the Philippines. Most of the ones i've had a look at requires a return ticket for me to be eligible. a friend of mine suggested that i just take up worldwide travel insurance from world nomads (that way if i decide to travel to another country, i'd still be covered), which makes sense, but i just don't think their coverage is very extensive.

so my q is, can anyone recommend a good one way travel insurance? what would you do if you were in my situation - go for the travel insurance or stick with the visitors to canada insurance?

cheers

World Nomads is fine while you are in Philippines if you are not happy with them there are dozens of other insurers to choose from globally. I would buy a separate policy from a Canadian Insurance Company for you trip to Canada it is easier to get claims paid and Canadian Insurers have more expertise in dealing with Canadian health care providers. Unfortunately Canadian Insurers will not insure you if you are traveling to Philippines and then Canada, if it was the opposite they would insure you as long the majority of your trip would be spent in Canada. I deal with several insurance companies that offer worldwide travel including Philippines.

If you need a quote contact me I will be happy to assist you.

No Canadian Insurance Company will do this. This person needs insurance while traveling before they visit Canada. These are usually U.S. or other international Travel Insurance Providers, I am sorry your advise is misinformed. Please refer to any Canadian Travel Insurance Policy for their terms and conditions.

Awesome, thanks for the advise. I've decided to take up travel insurance from Travel Insurance Direct for my time in the Philippines and then purchased TIC, which starts upon my arrival in Toronto.

TIC is good company to deal with I place a lot of business with them, one word of advise since you contacted me but probably purchased insurance directly. When using a broker a you have added protection with Canadian Insurance Brokers, we all carry Errors and Emissions insurance and you can shop multiple carriers. There is no cost to using a broker the premium is the same regardless of the channel you purchase insurance from.

I am an IFB member and carry both personal and corporate E&O. You have to be careful not all E&O provide coverage for travel insurance or as they term it dealing with foreigners. This has changes as most brokers today offer super visa insurance. What their issue was there are brokers that can deal internationally for travel insurance with global providers in the U.S. In Canada we still need to catch up and realize we are not competing in the Canadian marketplace but in a global marketplace.

Here is a real life example one of my friends from India had his parents apply for a visitors visa and I quoted him emergency medical insurance. He shopped the market and decided to buy his insurance from ICIC or State Bank of India I forget which one. India is one of the fastest growing markets for travel, I recently spoke to some of my insurance providers and indicated to them they need to become more competitive globally not just in Canada or they will simply lose the business. It is not a requirement to but travel insurance from a Canadian carrier for a regular visitors visa even though Canadian insurance companies have expertise dealing with Canadian health care providers and paying claims.

My friend saw things differently State Bank of India has branches in Mississauga and Brampton Ontario I have no chacked ICIC, so he was comfortable dealing with established institutions they know. I cannot comment on their coverage but the fact remains people have choices and we need to become more competitive not just in Canada but globally.
