Okay, we just our COPR sorted out yesterday, and we are planning to leave the UK at the end of November. We're moving to Alberta, and we know that new residents can apply for medical immediately after arriving there. What we want to know is if anyone can recommend any UK insurance companies that can provide us with some one-way insurance to cover us while the application for Alberta Health is being processed? Most UK insurer sites provide 'single trip' insurance, but these state that you have to be returning to the UK. If anyone can give us some advice or recommendations it would be most appreciated!!!

When I was between work permits and staying in Canada on a visitor visa without ever leaving the country I had the same problem, no one would cover me because the insurance had to start and end in my home country (NZ). The only company that I could find was World Nomads. They cover everyone from everywhere going anywhere so check them out. They are really well priced as they are targeting back packers who just want the minimum coverage (you can upgrade it), but it pays to buy a generous amount up front as if you need to extend it for only a few weeks it will be at a higher rate, but still much cheaper than regular travel insurance.

Hope that helps.

In the provinces where you have a 3 month waiting period, there are Canadian insurance companies which sell short term insurance specifically for immigrants. While it may not cover the actual voyage over, you may be able to find what you need with them. There are a couple companies- I think it's called New Immigrant coverage or something along those lines. Blue Cross is one company that does it in QC, but googling should cover it. Congrats!

Thanks for the info. Luckily we're moving to Alberta so we're covered pretty quickly. We went with Essential Travel Insurance, it had the best cover for us and was also pretty cheap: £50 for 2 adults and 1 infant. The policy covers the flight (incl adverse weather and airline failure) and emergency meds for 3 days.
