I am a domestic helper in Hong Kong and will accompany my employer's children to Canada this summer on a proper visitor visa.

My employer is willing to let me work for their family in Canada.

I hear that the application time applying from Hong Kong is over 6 months, but the family want me before that.

Is is possible for me to sign a contract and apply to work with the new family after I arrive in Canada on the visitor visa? If so, what is the process and is it faster to work with an agency?

Any advice is most welcome. My new potential employer is in the Toronto area.

Thank you and God bless!

Your employer can start the recruitment process while you're not in Canada yet. The position has to be advertised with the national job bank for at least 14 days. They then need to make a summary of the recruitment process and if no CC or PR applied, they can sign a contract with you (of course, you can sign a contract with them ahead of time because they want you to work for them) and send the application for the LMO after two weeks of advertising. They can assign somebody in the Toronto area to do the application for them or they can do it themselves but they would have to have a CRA number as employer before they can place the ad at the national job bank.

Your employer needs to advertise for the position (they can do so now while you're still out of Canada)

Any advice is most welcome. My new potential employer is in the Toronto area. If no Canadian Citizen (no Canadian has yet applied as live in caregiver for minimum wage) or permanent resident applied for the position, your employer can apply for the labour market opinion in your favour.

Thank you and God bless!

Thank you, Job Seeker - you are very helpful on this site. Wow - almost 3,000 comments!!

A few follow up questions:

1. How long does it take to get an LMO after the 14 day no response period?

2. If an agency does the advertising and getting the LMO, how much will they charge? Can you recommend any who are based in the North East Toronto suburbs (Oshawa)?

3. I need to accompany my employer's children to Candada for the summer holidays and will do this on a proper visitor work visa which we will obtain in Hong Kong. Given my need to enter Canada in early July in this way, when would be the best time to apply for the Live-in Caregiver visa - before or after I enter Canada? if I enter in this way, I am guessing I will get 6 months, will the visa normally be through by then? Will there be any restriction of my living with my prospective employer while I wait for the visa?

4. In order to apply for the medical and the police clearance does one have to have started the visa application process or can one start the collection of this information before starting to apply?

5. I am a high school graduate only - no college education, but I have been a helper in Hong Kong for 10 years. Will this work experience qualify me to apply for this type of visa?

I am sorry if all these questions are very basic, but people here in HK really do not know the answers and their information is often contradictory.

Thank you very much for your help with this!

God Bless.

4. In order to apply for the medical and the police clearance does one have to have started the visa application process or can one start the collection of this information before starting to apply? Obtain your PCCs now. Have your meds when you receive a positive LMO.

Thank you very much Job Seeker! Sorry for all these questions!!

If I apply in Buffallo - do I need to apply for an American visa? Is this available from Canada? I am a Philippino national.

Do I need to sign a contract before my potential employer applies for the LMO, or can they apply for the LMO before we sign the contract?

Once I lodge the application for a Live-in Caregiver visa after I arrive in Canada, am I allowed to stay in Canada without employment? I guess my employer in Hong Kong will lend me some funds to live on before I can officially work here.

If my visitor visa expires before the visa is processed, is it easy to get an extension?

Thank you again and God Bless.
